The author examines the existing models of co-development of cities and universities. The hypothesis is put forward that in the new economic reality of Russia, the joint development of cities and universities should be based on the synergy of advantages arising in the known to science models of co-development. The classification and analysis of models of joint development of cities and universities presented in scientific publications have allowed the revelation of features of their realization, on the basis of which the necessity of accounting and adaptation of each built model of co-development to unique features and competitive advantages of concrete city and university has been grounded. In addition, attention is focused on the need to include representatives of the business community in co-development models to ensure social and economic efficiency in the context of joint development of education, science, economy and society in the urban space.
