The author considers the problem of comprehension of historic trajectory of Russia: its identification either with East or West or its spin-off into a separate world. The analysis is given of intellectual debates about destiny of Russia, which start on the cusp of centuries. The author notes common staging ground for all “Russian idea” retrieval routes: dissatisfaction with current state of the country. It has been demonstrated that the drama of “Russian idea” is in diversity and discrepancy of beliefs about place and role of Russia in the world.
